UK Government Depot Charging Scheme
Posted 23rd July 2025
Key takeaways from our Director Alun
“The depot charging scheme aims to support the uptake of zero emission HGVs, vans, and coaches by part-funding the installation of charging infrastructure at fleet depots.
The scheme covers 75% of chargepoint and civil costs incurred, up to a maximum of £1 million across all sites. There is no limit to the number of sites you can apply for, but the scheme is limited to one application per organisation.
The scheme is open to public and private sector fleets, local authorities and non-profit organisations, located in England, Scotland, Wales and/or Northern Ireland.
The application window will close on 28 November 2025 or when funding has been exhausted (whichever is sooner), and works must be completed by 31 March 2026.
Support for the purchase of electric vans and HGVs is available through the Plug-in Van and Truck Grant.”
Everything You Need To Know About This New UK Government Depot Charging Scheme For eHGVs
What is the UK Government’s Depot Charging Scheme for eHGVs?
The Depot Charging Scheme is a government grant supporting the cost of installing EV charging infrastructure for heavy goods vehicles HGVs at depots across the UK. It covers the cost of grid upgrades, enabling works, and chargepoint installations to help fleet operators transition to electric HGVs.
Who is eligible for the Depot Charging Scheme?
Fleet operators, logistics companies, and site owners who plan to operate battery electric HGVs from a depot in the UK are eligible. The scheme is open to both public and private sector operators, provided they can demonstrate a genuine need for HGV charging infrastructure.
How much funding can I get for HGV charger installation?
Funding levels vary based on site size and connection costs. The scheme may cover up to 75 percent of eligible costs for enabling works such as new substations, cabling, switchgear, and connection upgrades. Charger hardware and installation costs may also be part funded depending on your project plan.
Can ElectrAssure help me apply for the Depot Charging Scheme?
Yes. ElectrAssure can support you from start to finish including eligibility checks, site surveys, technical design, and assistance with your application. We can also liaise with the Distribution Network Operator DNO or Independent Distribution Network Operator IDNO to reduce your connection times and costs.
What kind of chargers are suitable for electric HGVs?
Electric HGVs require DC rapid or ultra rapid chargers to minimise downtime. We typically install DC 60kW to 400kW chargers, depending on vehicle type and fleet usage. For multi vehicle depots, we design and install dynamic load balancing systems to share power efficiently.
For Smaller eHGV’s the 43kW Garo AC charging point can typically charge from 8-14 hours depending on dwell time.
Can I futureproof my depot for more eHGVs later?
Absolutely. ElectrAssure designs scalable charging infrastructure that allows for phased installation, battery storage integration, and capacity upgrades. Our systems are OCPP compliant and built for long term expansion as your fleet grows.
What types of electric HGVs are compatible with your chargers?
Our depot charging systems are compatible with all major eHGV brands including Renault Trucks D Wide ZE and Master ZE DAF CF Electric, LF Electric, and XF Electric Volvo FL Electric and FE Electric Mercedes Benz eActros MAN eTGM FUSO eCanter Iveco S Way Electric Scania Electric R Series Tevva 75 tonne and 12 tonne models
How long does it take to install HGV charging infrastructure?
Timelines vary depending on whether a new grid connection or substation is required. ElectrAssure can typically deliver a full installation within 12 to 24 weeks, including civils, electrical works, commissioning, and network approvals.
Do I need planning permission to install HGV chargers?
In most cases, planning permission is not required, especially for chargers installed within an existing depot boundary. However, if new substations or major civil works are needed, planning approval may be necessary. ElectrAssure will advise you and handle applications as needed.
What aftercare and maintenance support do you offer?
ElectrAssure offers tailored maintenance packages for commercial fleets including critical response SLAs, annual servicing, fault resolution, and chargepoint management system CPMS support. We are trusted by National Grid, Uber, and other major operators for mission critical charger uptime.
